Who can renew a passport

If you requested the X gender identifier in the past, we placed a sticker in your passport. We call this the “X” observation sticker.

If your passport has an “X” observation sticker, it is the same as having the “X” printed on it.

When not to apply for renewal

Do not apply for a renewal if you

• currently have a child passport that was issued when you were under 16 years old
  • You cannot renew a child passport.
  • If you’re at least 16 years old and your child passport expired, you need an adult passport.

  For these situations, you must apply for a new adult passport. You can apply for an adult passport

  • in Canada
  • from the United States
  • from outside Canada and the United States

  Check the date of issue. If the date it was issued is within the past 15 years and you meet the other eligibility requirements, you can apply to renew your passport.

  Answer a few questions to find out if you can renew your passport

  Only adult passports can be renewed. If you were under the age of 16 when you last applied, you have to apply for a new passport.

  Without the information from your most recent passport, you can’t use the renewal process. You need to apply for a new passport.

  If your passport was issued more than 15 years ago, you need to apply for a new passport. You can’t apply for a renewal.

  You can only renew a 5- or 10-year passport. You can’t renew a passport that was issued for a shorter period.

  You can only renew your passport if your personal information hasn’t changed.

  If you want to change the name, date of birth or place of birth, you need to apply for a new passport.

  If you want to change the “F”, “M” or “X” in the “sex” field, find out how to update the gender identifier on a passport.
