A candidate shall be declared to have passed in individual theory / laboratory / project / drawing / design course if s/he secures a minimum of 40% aggregate marks (continuous internal assessment and semester end examination marks put together), subject to securing a minimum of 35% marks in the semester end examination. On passing a course of a program, the student shall earn the credits as assigned to that course.
For value added courses / audit courses / mandatory courses, result shall be declared with “Satisfactory” or “Not Satisfactory” performance.
A letter grade and grade points will be awarded to a student in each course based on his performance. A letter grade is basically a qualitative measure (an alphabet / letter) giving the performance of a student, such as, Outstanding / Superior (S), Excellent (A+), Very Good (A), Good (B+), Average (B), Pass (C) and Unsatisfactory / Fail (F), based on the raw score (marks, as in conventional practice) obtained by the student. This is usually arrived at after the student’s performance in a course, which includes both continuous internal assessment (CIA) and semester end examination (SEE). The Institute has decided to adopt the 10-point absolute grading system in the initial years of academic autonomy. The method of awarding Letter Grade and Grade Points for Four Year B.Tech course is given below:
Grade Points Scale (Absolute Grading)
Range of Marks | Letter Grade | Grade Points |
---|---|---|
100 – 90 | S (Superior) | 10 |
89 – 80 | A+ (Excellent) | 9 |
79 – 70 | A (Very Good) | 8 |
69 – 60 | B+ (Good) | 7 |
59 – 50 | B (Average) | 6 |
49 – 40 | C (Pass) | 5 |
Below 40 | F (Fail) | 0 |
Absent | AB (Absent) | 0 |
Authorized Break of Study | ABS | 0 |
A student is deemed to have passed and acquired to correspondent credits in particular course if s/he obtains any one of the following grades: “S”, “A+”, “A”, “B+”, “B”, “C”. A student obtaining Grade “F” shall be considered Failed and will be required to reappear in the examination. For non credit courses, ‘Satisfactory’ or “Not Satisfactory” is indicated instead of the letter grade and this will not be counted for the computation of SGPA/CGPA.
The credit index can be used further for calculating the Semester Grade Point Average and the Cumulative Grade Point Average, both of which being important performance indices of the student.
The performance of each student at the end of the each semester is indicated in terms of SGPA. The SGPA is calculated as given below:
SGPA = ∑ [(Course Credits) X (Grade Points)] (for all courses in that semester, including “F” grades) / ∑ [(Course Credits)] (for all courses in that semester, including “F” grades)
CGPA gives the sum total of credit indices of all the previous semesters divided by the total number of credits registered in all these semesters. The CGPA is calculated as given below:
CGPA = ∑ [(Course Credits) X (Grade Points)] (for all courses until that semester excluding those with “F” grades) / ∑ [(Course Credits)] (for all courses until that semester excluding those with “F” grades)
Typical example - Calculation of SGPA/CGPA

*Total No. of credits excluding those with “F” grades; this is particularly important to keep track of the number of credits earned by a student up to any semester.
